Candy Lafayette and Beauty!

Meet Candy Lafayette and Beauty!

Lafayette was a great magician around the turn of the last century who performed as all kinds of fun popular characters, but what I love about him most was his great love for his pet dog, Beauty.  Houdini gave him Beauty to console him when his other pet dog died, and Lafayette loved Beauty so much, they were totally inseparable and Lafayette treated her like royalty .  But, sadly, Beauty  eventually got old and passed away at age fifteen when Lafayette was performing in Scotland in 1911.  Lafayette was of course completely devastated, and decided to have his beloved pet embalmed and buried in royal style in a cemetery for people.  The Scottish authorities would only agree to that if he would agree to be buried there, too, so he did.  Well, as fate would have it, just before Beauty's funeral, a terrible fire swept through Lafayette's theater and he was killed at only 39.  So his ashes were put into a little box, nestled in Beauty's paws, and to this day they're still together.  You can actually see a photo of them in their sweet little casket, as well as photos of them enjoying happy times and more stories about them, in a fantastic book called The Illustrated History of Magic by Milbourne Christopher.   I adore my pets, so I really love Lafayette and Beauty, and I always make sure to keep their two candy figures together!
